On December 5 Portsmouth suffered the heaviest night raid of 1940 when at 20:00 hrs some 50 bombs were dropped across the city. The Carlton Cinema - pictured above - in Cosham High Street was hit by a 250 Kg bomb that exploded in the projectionist's room. 250 people were in the cinema at the time and over 50 were killed or injured.

 5 December 1940. The centre portion of Highbury Buildings near the Carlton Cinema was brought down by a bomb that exploded on the pavement a few feet away from the front wall.

 
 

 

Cosham Home Guard Oct 1944

 'A' Company, 31st (Cosham) Battalion, Hampshire Home Guard - 15th October 1944. This was probably a last commemorative photograph taken of the Company, as the Home Guard was disbanded* 2 months later.
