Paulsgrove
chalk pit as it is today (2001).
The chalk face was painted with camouflage
during WWII to prevent it being used as a navigation point by the
Luftwaffe. The
last major quarrying took place here in the 1970s to provide construction
material
for the building of the M275. This resulted in the lowering of
the quarry floor by some 40 feet as compared to its wartime level.
