Crookhorn (Morelands) HAA battery

The third HAA battery on Portsdown was located at Morelands, Crookhorn. This site was completely leveled and rebuilt on during the early 1970s and not a trace of it remains today. It housed 4 x 3.7 inch guns.

Morelands HAA battery aerial photo

An aerial photograph of the Morelands HAA battery taken in 1969. The road running across the picture is Crookhorn Lane. The Centurion Pub is arrowed. The 4 concrete gun emplacements are clearly visible on the lower left, with a design very similar to that of the Nelson HAA battery. The 5th and 6th (square) Holdfast Gun-pits were erected 1943-44 with the intention of increasing the site to a 6 gun battery prior to D-Day. Also on this site there were 2 x 5 bay reinforced concrete magazines, and a Cabin type Command Post.
